Lesson 57 | 03/01/26 Revelation 14:11-20 | The Harvest of Judgement
The last several chapters, 11-14, have given us great insight into the events of the middle of the week. Now the end of chapter 14 gives us a preview of the unfolding Judgement that is to come in the last half of the Tribulation. Let’s read Revelation 14:14-20. Last week we saw Jesus gather the 144,000 to Himself as He took them away from the evil of the world, Rev 14:3-4. Now we see a vision of the coming Judgement in the last 3-1/2 years as the Lord of the Harvest reaps the earth in Righteous Judgement. This is not a harvest of souls for the Kingdom, but a harvest to collect the worthless fruit and expel it from His Kingdom. Last week we read the parable of the wheat and the tares, focusing on the gathering of the wheat into His barn. Now let’s read the explanation of the parable relating to the gathering and burning of the tares, Matthew 13:37-43. Expelling the worthless fruit of the harvest and the weeds that have grown up in the Kingdom is a necessary part of God’s plan of Redemption to usher in Everlasting Righteousness. John the Baptist spoke of this coming Judgement, Matt 3:7-12.
This is a vision of Jesus putting in His sickle to reap the unbelievers from His Kingdom
Revelation 14:14)
Son of Man- Jesus’ favorite title of Himself. Used over 80x in the Gospels
“The Cloud Rider”... referring to the prophecy of Daniel 7:13-14; Matthew 24:29-30; 26:64.
It is because Jesus is a Man that He has the authority to Judge, John 5:27.
Revelation 14:15-16)
Angel speaks to Jesus with orders from the Temple.
Messenger of God, telling the Father’s command and timing
“the time, ὥρα, hour has come.” The hour of final Judgement
Send, Πέμψον, Your sickle and reap
Send the angels, send your sickle, the means of reaping
The angels are Jesus’ servants to do the reaping, Matt 13:39; Rev 15:1
For the harvest is ripe, ἐξηράνθη, dried up, withered
The harvest of these earth-dwellers is rotten, worthless, dried up spiritually
They have given themselves over to the Beast and the time of their Judgement has come
In verse 16, John sees Jesus put in His sickle for the harvest.
This is a preview to the Judgement to come played out in chapters 15-16 with the bowls of wrath
Revelation 14:17-18)
Here are two more angels, servants of God, performing the Righteous Judgement of Jesus.
Angels play a major role in performing acts of Judgement on behalf of Almighty God
This 4th angel comes out from the Temple also with a sharp sickle of Judgement
And another 5th angel, ἄλλος ἄγγελος, an angel of the same kind, comes out from heaven having the authority of fire... depicting Judgement
Judgement from the altar of incense in the temple in heaven
a result of the prayers of the Tribulation Martyrs
Vengeance on the enemies of God, Revelation 6:9-11; 8:3-5; 16:4-7.
This time the Judgement is depicted with harvesting grapes
The word “ripe” in verse 18 is different than the word in 15.
ἀκμάζω, reaching its farthest point
time is up, judgement is at hand. It is the final hour
Revelation 14:19-20)
Again, this is not a harvest of souls.
It is a gathering of worthless fruit and casting them down to be trampled by God’s wrath
Isaiah foretells of these worthless grapes, Isaiah 5:1-7; Matthew 21:33. The wicked vinedressers and the wild grapes
The imagery of God treading out the winepress of His enemies is foretold in Isaiah 63:1-6.
Chapter 14 is a preview of this coming Judgment that will take place when Jesus returns physically,
Revelation 19:13- His robe dipped in the blood of His enemies
The blood of Jesus’ enemies- 4’ tall x 184 miles
Millions of people coming against God to fight Him in the battle of Armageddon
But when Jesus returns, it is not just one battle. It has been called the campaign of Armageddon
A series of battles that begin in Bozrah and goes all the way north to Megiddo
The distance from Bozrah to Megiddo is 184 miles
Significance of the grain harvest and the grape harvest
Revelation 14 describes this final Judgement in two ways using the symbolism of these two harvests, grain and grapes
Joel describes this coming Judgement in a similar manner, Joel 1:10-2:2, 11-14; 2:18-19; 3:12-18.
The fruit of these two harvests are extremely important.
Grain = Bread
Grapes = Wine
These two elements are a major thread through the Bible, Deut 15:12-15.
By these two elements of the bread and the wine, we remember our redemption, 1 Cor 11:24-26.
These are symbols of our covenant.
Melchizedek brought out the bread and the wine to Abram, Gen 14:18
These are the elements of our Salvation and Redemption (the two immutable things, Hebrews 6:18)
These same elements are bringing wrath and Judgement to our enemies
Just as God’s Word brings Salvation, it will also bring Judgement, John 12:48; Rev 19:15
Judgement on our enemies is an element of our Salvation
