Revelation 19:1-6 | Alleluia, Praise the Lord

Chapter 19 describes the most anticipated event of all time... the Return of our Lord, the destruction of evil from the world, and our unity with Jesus Christ our Savior.

• The Old Testament is full of prophecies pertaining to this event, namely the Day of the Lord as we have seen hundreds of prophecies over the course of our study.
• Also, a major topic in the New Testament in which almost every book makes reference to this Day, Matt 24; Mark 14:62; Luke 21; John 12:47-50; Acts 1:6-7; 2:20; Romans 2:5; 11:26; 1 Cor 13:10; 15:20-28; 2 Cor 5:1-5; Eph 1:20-21; 5:26-27, 32; Phil 2:9-11; 3:18-21; Col 3:4; 1&2 Thess; 1 Tim 6:14; 2 Tim 2:12; 4:8; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 9:28; 10:30; 12:25-29; James 5:7; 1 Pet 2:12; 5:1-4; 2 Pet 1:4; 2-3; 1 John 3:2; Jude 14-15.
  • Galatians 1:3-5- THE Glory... praise to our God for removing the evil from our midst

Let’s start by reading the first 6 verses, Revelation 19:1-6.

• Anthem of rejoicing. A praise to our Lord for His Judgement on our enemies.
• The Psalms continually speak of God’s vengeance on the enemies of God, Ps 2; 6:10; 7:11-17
• Deuteronomy many foreshadowing’s of this Day of the Lord and the removal of evil from our midst
  • “Put away evil from your midst,” Deut 13:5; 17:7; 17:12; 19:19-20; 21:21; 22:21-24; 24:7;  
  • “Have no pity on them,” Deut 7:16
    • No sorrow, no mourning, no pity for our enemies, but rejoicing over their destruction because they have rejected our God
    • This is Righteous Judgement and God preparing the earth for His Righteous Kingdom to reign

Before we begin looking in depth at chapter 19, I want to read Isaiah 24 because it ties chapter 18 and the destruction of Babylon together with  the events of what we will see in this next chapter, Isaiah 24.

• Jesus is evicting the wicked tenants from His land so that He can set up His Righteous Kingdom
• Notice the gatherings in Isaiah 24:21-22. There are several gatherings happening in chapter 19:
  • The gathering of the host of heaven (fallen angels and demons) and the kings of the earth for destruction, Rev 19:17-18
  •  The gathering of His bride and the wedding guests, Rev 19:7-9
  • The gathering of the Jews for their redemption, Matt 24:31; Zech 12:8-10; 13:9

Revelation 19:1)
Chapter 19 begins with another μετὰ ταῦτα ... after this

• After the Judgements of the 7-Year Tribulation
• After Babylon has been destroyed
• After the Judgement of the Great Harlot... there is great rejoicing in heaven

Alleluia- Ἁλληλουϊά

• Greek transliteration of the Hebrew, “Hallelujah.” Praise the Lord (YAH)
• Ἁλληλουϊά- only found 4x in the NT and only in Revelation 19
  • Found 17x in the LXX. One example is Psalm 104:35.
    • Praise the Lord for His Righteousness and the destruction of the wicked on the earth

Salvation and glory and honor and power...

• The NKJV doesn’t translate the articles with these four words...

• THE Salvation, THE Glory, THE Honor, THE Power
  • Singular and specific to the only One who is worthy of this

Revelation 19:2)
For (ὅτι) Because True and Righteous are His Judgements...

• This is who Jesus IS, Rev 19:11
• The angel made this announcement with the 3rd Bowl Judgement, Rev 16:4-7.

Babylon has corrupted the earth with her in-dealings with men, Isaiah 24:5-6

• As we learned in chapters 17-18, it has been the enemy’s primary objective to corrupt the seed of men
  • Began back in Genesis 6 and will continue through the end of the Tribulation

He has avenged on her...

• The Day of Vengeance, Nahum 1:2
• Prophesied in Isaiah 61:1-2
  • Jesus stopped at a comma in Luke 4:17-19, because the Day of Vengeance wasn’t yet fulfilled at His first coming. It will be fulfilled at His return in the Day of the Lord

Revelation 19:3)
Again, they said, Alleluia...

• καὶ δεύτερον εἴρηκαν- and a second time having said... Praise the Lord (the second of four Alleluia’s)

Her smoke rises up forever and ever...

• eternal torment to Babylon and anyone who follows her, Rev 14:8-11.

Revelation 19:4)
Twenty four elders...

• this is the last mention of the twenty four elders
  • this group represents the raptured Bride of Christ
  • in verses 7-9 the raptured saints are getting married
    • never see the twenty four elders mentioned at the same time as the Bride
    • unlike the Tribulation martyrs who are mentioned alongside the twenty four elders, showing a distinction, Rev 7:13-14.

fell down and worshiped God who sat on the throne...

• Revelation 15:8 said no one was allowed in the throne during the Bowl Judgements
  • All the saints had left the throne room and are getting ready for a wedding
  • Revelation 4:10 says the twenty four elders fell down BEFORE HIM who sat on the throne
    • Here in 19:4, they fall down but not before Him
    • Subtle difference, but worth mentioning because it shows the exactness of Scripture

Revelation 19:5)
A voice came from the throne..

• Not God, probably another angel
  • “Praise our God,” Alleluia
• Notice the angel says, “our God” ... God is the God of angels and men

Revelation 19:6)
All of heaven... angels, Tribulation saints, twenty four elders, four living creatures...

• everyone saying “Alleluia!    ... Why?
• ὅτι Because the Lord God Omnipotent reigns (For is a bad translation)
  • Omnipotent- παντοκράτωρ- Almighty
  • 10x in NT... 9x in Revelation,
    • Notice the context when this word is used. Righteous Judgement and authority, Rev 1:8; 11:17; 15:3; 16:7; 16:14; 19:6; 19:15;
    • Only other use in the NT is 2 Cor 6:17-18- Come out of her My people.

 
Our King is coming. The Lord God Almighty reigns. He is King of kings and Lord of lords and He will reign on the earth!
Praise be to our God forevermore! Alleluia!
