Revelation 19:7-9 | The Marriage of the Lamb In Christ

Last week we began looking at the marriage supper of the Lamb and this astounding promise to the Church that we might be married to Jesus in complete oneness as His Bride. Let’s read this in Revelation 19:7-9.
John tells us in verse 7, “His wife has made herself ready.” Last week we looked at many verses that describe how we as the Bride are to make ourselves ready for Jesus. It’s not about good works, but a matter of the heart. It’s about choosing righteousness, choosing to be in Christ, loving Him and being watchful and ready for Him.
Now that we have a clear understanding who the Bride is, in this lesson we will look at the beautiful promises that Scripture speaks of concerning this marriage that the Church will have as we are brought into union with Jesus. Normally, we dive into the Old Testament to help us gain a clearer understanding of the Truths of Revelation, but this topic of the Bride of Christ is almost completely veiled in the Prophets. There are glimpses, such as Ruth and Boaz; Isaiah 61:10; 54:5-7, but the Church, specifically the union of the Church with Jesus was a mystery before the cross. But now has been made manifest to us in these last days, 1 Peter 1:10-12, 20-21.
Before Jesus gave John this Revelation on the isle of Patmos in 95ad, He revealed this beautiful union of the mystery of Christ and the Church to Paul roughly 30 years earlier, of which he wrote much about in his letters. There are three times Paul specifically mentions this special marriage, Eph 5:32; 2 Corinthians 11:2-3; Romans 7:4. We will be diving into these passages today among others in which Paul writes about the oneness of Christ and the Church. Finally, we will look at the words of Jesus Himself in His private discourse to His disciples in John 14 and 17.
The Marriage of the Lamb in Christ
Let’s begin by reading, Ephesians 5:15-33; 3:1-21.

• The marriage between a husband and a wife becomes a model between Christ and His Church, His faithful Bride
• The main thread through the book of Ephesians is that we would be IN CHRIST.
  • How do we get “IN CHRIST?” We believe and Christ brings us INTO Himself to be one with Him.

Ephesians 5:32 makes an astounding claim...

Ephesians 5:32     This is a great mystery,                     but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Ephesians 5:32 τὸ μυστήριον τοῦτο μέγα ἐστίν·          ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω εἰς Χριστὸν καὶ εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν.

The thread of being “IN CHRIST” and being brought INTO Him is a common thread throughout Paul’s epistles...
 
2 Corinthians 11:2–4-2 For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it!
In verse 3, Paul says “I fear...” There is something Paul is warning us of that might separate us away from marrying Jesus
2 Corinthians 11:3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
2 Corinthians 11:3 φοβοῦμαι δὲ ...οὕτω φθαρῇ τὰ νοήματα ὑμῶν ἀπὸ τῆς ἁπλότητος τῆς εἰς τὸν Χριστόν.
Zack’s Translation But I fear... that your minds might be corrupted away from the purity/singleness of mind of that which is into Christ.

• Ephesians 4:1-6 speaks of this oneness or singleness of mind we should have in Christ

 
Romans 7:1–4-1 Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? 2 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. 4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.

Again, Paul uses the model of marriage to show the oneness in Christ
Romans 7:4 ...you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead...
Romans 7:4 ...καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐθανατώθητε τῷ νόμῳ διὰ τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ, εἰς τὸ γενέσθαι ὑμᾶς ἑτέρῳ, τῷ ἐκ νεκρῶν ἐγερθέντι...
Zack’s Translation  ...you have become dead to the Law through the body of Christ into which (body) begets us to another, to Him who was raised from the dead.

• Romans 6:3 ... we are baptized into His death... now dead to the Law
  • This death with Christ gives us the freedom to choose who we will marry, whom will we serve, what manner of life we will walk in
  • Jesus gave us His life so that we might have the opportunity to brought into union with Him

Many other epistles that speak of being brought into Jesus, and we do this by faith, Galatians 2:16-20; 3:14-29;

• The Bride will choose to walk in Him; is rooted and built up in Him, and established in the faith, Col 2:4-8
• This is the pre-pathed plan of redemption set forth by the Father in Jesus Christ before the foundation of the world, Ephesians 1:3-14.
  • This is the mystery of Christ and the Church that was revealed to Paul

Finally, Jesus speaks of this unification with Him in His intimate meeting with His disciples just before He goes to the cross, John 14:1-3, 19-23; John 17:1-26. Just as the marriage is a model for our oneness in Christ, the ancient Jewish wedding is a model for this entire marriage process with Jesus.  

• The betrothal,
  • The groom pays the price and makes a covenant with His future Bride, Matt 26:28; 1 Cor 6:20
• The departure,
  • The groom goes back to His father’s house to build a room addition for His future Bride, John 14:1-2;
• The expected return,
  • The rapture, John 14:3, 21; 1 Thess 4:17; Matt 25:1-13
• The marriage,
  • The consummation to become one, Eph 5:32; Rev 19:7-8; John 17:20-23
• The marriage supper,
  • A 7 day feast (modeling the 7-year Tribulation) at the end the bride and groom both drink again at the marriage supper, Matt 26:29; Revelation 19:9

Revelation 19:9- Then he said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God.”
