Revelation 19:11-16 | The Return of the King

We have come to the most anticipated event in Biblical prophesy... the Return of the King; the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. At the beginning of this book of Revelation, John greets the reader with an introduction of the King, Revelation 1:4-8. Now after 72 lessons, spanning almost two years, we have come to this anticipated event: the appearance of Jesus Christ, the Coming One. Let’s begin by reading this account in Revelation 19:11-16.
For 2,000 years we have been expecting our Coming King. The Second Coming of Christ is the culmination, and the end of the 7 Year Tribulation. It is as Joel says, “the Great and Awesome Day of the Lord,” Joel 2:31. When the sky rips open and our Lord appears in Glory. Not like the first time as a lowly servant who came humbly to the earth, but as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah who judges and makes war with His enemies in which everyone will see and know that He is God.
In 19:11 John says “He judges and makes war.” Many people know this as “The battle of Armageddon,” but when you study the prophecies of Scripture, we discover that Megiddo is just the starting point of a war that takes place over several stages, from Megiddo to Petra. There are several events that will take place at Jesus’ return, so rather than calling it “The battle of Armageddon,” many scholars refer to these events as “The Campaign of Armageddon.” I like to say there is a sequence to Jesus’ return.

1. The Antichrist and his forces gather at Megiddo, Rev 16:12-16
2. The remanent of the Jews are scattered to the mountains in hiding, Matt 24:1-31
3. The Antichrist leads his army south to destroy the Jews in Bozrah/Petra, Micah 2:12-13
4. The remnant of Jews finally acknowledge Jesus as their Savior and King, Hosea 5:15; Isaiah 53
5. The Return of the King
   • First to the land of Edom to save the remnant in the mountains of Petra and Bozrah, Isaiah 34:1-8; 63:1-6
   • Jesus continues north to the Mount of Olives making war, Zech 14:1-5; Joel 3:12-16;  
     • Jews held captive in Jerusalem will flee as Jesus defeats the Antichrist Zech 14:5
     • The Supper of the Great God, Rev 19:17-21; Jer 7:32-33; 19:6-7
6. Jesus sets up His throne as King in Jerusalem, Isaiah 24:21-23; 25:6-9; Zech 14:6-21
7. The Sheep and Goat Judgement is initiated, Matt 25:31-46; Joel 3:1-2; Ezek 34:17; 37:21

 
1) The Antichrist and his forces gather at Megiddo
The Day of His return and all the events leading up to this is orchestrated and appointed by Jesus. This is the time of the Lord’s wrath. At the 6th Bowl Judgement, He will dry up the Euphrates River leading the enemy to their slaughter. The enemy will think they are in charge as they gather everyone for the great battle against God. They will gather in Megiddo at a place called in Hebrew, Armageddon, Rev 16:12-16.

• The Antichrist will be coming from the north. This may by why he is called “The Assyrian.” Hosea 1:5; Micah 5:5-6; Nahum 1:11; Isaiah 10:24-27

2) The remanent of the Jews are scattered to the mountains in hiding
When the Antichrist breaks the covenant with Israel and sets up the abomination of desolation, the Jews will flee to the mountains, many to Edom, hiding in the rocks of Petra south of Bozrah, and maybe others scattered to the nations hiding where they can, Matt 24:1-31.

3) The Antichrist leads his army south to destroy the Jews in Bozrah/Petra,
Micah prophecies that the Jews will be gathered together like sheep in a sheepfold (Bozrah), Micah 2:12-13.

4) The remnant of Jews finally acknowledge Jesus as their Savior and King
With their backs against the wall, the Jews have nowhere else to turn and in their desperation they cry out to God to save them. Their blindness is removed and they receive Jesus as their Savior and King, Hosea 5:15; Isaiah 53; Zech 12:10; Rev 1:7; Rom 11:25-27, 12-15

5) The Return of the King
Immediately after the Jews acknowledgment of their offence of rejecting Jesus Christ as Messiah, the heavens open up and the King returns, Jude 14; 2 Thess 2

• First to the land of Edom to save the remnant in the mountains of Petra and Bozrah, Isaiah 34:1-8; 63:1-6
• Jesus continues north to the Mount of Olives making war, Zech 14:1-5; Joel 3:12-16;  
  • Jews held captive in Jerusalem will flee as Jesus defeats the Antichrist Zech 14:5
  • The Supper of the Great God, Rev 19:17-21; Jer 7:32-33; 19:6-7

 
Next week, with a foundation from the Prophets of this event, we will look at these verses in Revelation 19:11-16 and pull out some more details of the Return of the King!
