History of Christopher Saur
Christopher Saur - Luther’s German Bible
The first Bible published in America in a Modern or European language was by Christoph (Christopher) Saur (1695-1758). He immigrated from Wittgenstein in central Germany to Germantown (by Philadelphia) in 1724.
The Christopher Saur family printed three versions of Martin Luther’s German Bible—all three a first: In 1743 the first European-language Bible in America. In 1763, the first Bible printed on American-made paper. And in 1776 the first Bible printed from American-made type and what became the so-called “Gun Wad Bible.”
This small pocket size edition of Martin Luther’s German translation of the Psalms has an American historical significance being printed just 3 years before the independence of the United States.
